Update

Update

Just putting up the last of my imagery.

I decided to stay with the gray colour for this alien. I felt it looked almost rock like and would work well with its indigenous environment.

Update

Here are the finalised designs for the two races. The savage are now called Raakthu, and the passive are now called the Vak'arshi. I put them next to each other to show the size difference.
These are the Raakthu, the adult and the infant.
These are the Vak'arshi, male and female versions.

I will go into the particulars of the design on the character turnarounds.

Update

Here are the pre final designs for both of my alien races. I have done two designs made up of my favourite parts of the development designs. From here I will combine the best parts into a completed and final design. I have been getting feedback from peers to see which parts of my designs are the best. I have had mixed reactions but generally my feelings are the same.

Personally, from the savage race I like the design on the left most of all but i am partial to the face of the design on the right, I may mix and match for the final design.
For the passive race my feelings are the opposite, I like the general design of the design on the right but prefer the head on the left design.

Update

Here are my thumbnails for both races. Got some good results, wish I just had more time. Looking back I think it may have been wiser to just create one alien race and go further in depth with the design.

Update

Forgot to post this. Finally got round to scanning some of my reference drawings in. Was difficult, i had to do them individually at different angles. Would have liked to do more but time is short.

Update

These are my final mind maps for the alien race designs. From here on out it will be all about visual design and development of my ideas.

Update

I've finally got round to doing some design sketches. so far I've started my initial sketches to just draw out some of the ideas i had in the mind maps, Mainly the physiological one as the cultures and such are difficult to draw in such quick sketches.

I will now finalize my ideas in mind map form and begin drawing some thumbnails for my actual design ideas.
I'm quickly running out of time and another project has sucked up most of my time. I am going to have to keep my remaining time in mine when i finalize my ideas as i doubt i will have time to do everything i initially planned.

Update (Design ideas)

Here are my mind maps showing the design ideas i've come up with for the alien race designs. Now that i've done this i can finally get on with he drawing side of the project. Time has become an issue and i may have to find ways to cut down the output and support my reasoning.

Update

Only a few weeks left now and I've only just finished all my research. Getting kinda worried about the scope of my project, it seemed manageable at first but i didn't realize how deep i planned to go into the research in order to support my design decisions.

I'm currently at the synthesis stage of my project, coming up with some initial ideas for the aliens based on my research. This is being done through mind maps at the moment. I will put the mind maps up when i get home, i don't currently have the software to open the files.

Update

Don't know why i didn't think of doing this earlier really. I figured that me just saying I've been doing research all this time isn't particularly convincing till i's seen so I'm just going to put up some screen shots from my design document.

Update

Damn, keep forgetting to update this, right well so far i'm still slightly behind as the research is much bigger than i thought. At least my designs will be well informed. I'm currently at the sketching stage, I've been doing some observational drawing of various animals and creatures. These are done in my sketchbook opposed to on Photoshop since i find it easier to do since i do not have dual monitors. The problem this poses is that my sketchbook is A3 and my scanner is A4, I will either have to try and scan them in in bits or simply take photos of them, which never really turns out well.

Until i get the scans done i'll post some images of the research i've done.

Update

Forgot to do this yesterday. At the moment i am still a week behind, i planned to make up the time by using the Saturday to do work, however circumstances meant the i lost time on Wednesday and Friday to do Zuby's work so i had to use my Saturday time for that.

I have continued my research and am at the moment half way through culture.

The aim is too update the blog every Monday after I've done my work. I chose to work in this pattern as to keep my research fresh in my mind and to transition from research to observational sketches to inital design sketches so to carry across the influences.
